The written memoir
I was born in 1948 in Karşıyaka, in İzmir. My father Hasan was a fisherman; every morning, in the dark, he rowed his little boat out to sea. My mother Hatice knotted nets at home, her fingers never still.
One summer my father gave me a small fishing line and took me out in the boat for the first time. I was nine years old. That was the first day I saw the sea turn to gold at sunrise.
